Information for Applicants
The Great Britain-China Educational Trust (GBCET) administers its own awards, and also makes awards with funds contributed by the Sino-British Fellowship Trust, the Universities' China Committee in London, and the Han Suyin Trust.
Han Suyin Trust
The funds awarded via the Han Suyin Trust are specifically for those candidates who hold a recognised medical degree, or a postgraduate/post-doctoral qualification in the field of science and technology with specific reference to the medical, environmental and economic sciences, with some work experience at the relevant level. Forest and coastal studies will also be considered as a priority.
Amount
Who can apply?

Chinese (from the PRC inc. Hong Kong) studying for a PhD in any subject, (but please see notes above on the Han Suyin Trust where eligibility criteria vary very slightly for those people studying in the relevant subject area.)

British postgraduate students (i.e. UK citizens only) giving conference papers in China, or travelling to China to pursue essential doctoral research.
Exclusions
The Trustees will NOT consider applications from:

Undergraduates or students requiring funding for the first year of an MPhil/ PhD or a postgraduate taught course: MA, MBA etc. (But see notes above on Han Suyin Trust. Some MA-level applicants studying in the relevant subject areas may be eligible.)

PRC/Hong Kong nationals for attending or giving papers at conferences.
The Application Form

All applicants should complete the application form as fully as possible and ensure they sign it.

Include confirmation of any offers of sholarships and other supporting documentation, if appropriate.

Applicants may enclose on separate sheets any additional information that supports their application.

The form should be completed in black ink or typescript as it will be photocopied.

For those filling in the form by pen/typewriter - if you run out of space in any question, please continue on a separate sheet of paper.
Supervisor's Comments Form

The applicant must provide a minimum of one reference which must be their supervisor. The Supervisor's Comments Form must be completed and signed by the supervisor, and countersigned by their head of department.

The completed and signed form may be enclosed with the application or sent under separate cover.

Additional information from the supervisor may be included on a separate sheet.

Applicants should ensure that their references are submitted on time as applications without references will not be considered.
NB. There is a discrepancy between the amount of the award as stated on this page and the amount quoted on the Supervisor's Comments form (£500-£2500). The larger amount as quoted on this page is the correct amount, i.e. £500-£5000.
Schedule & Contact Details
The Trustees meet twice a year, in the spring and in autumn.
The deadline for the next application is Monday 27 Octoberl 2008. The next meeting date is Wednesday 26 November 2008.
