Staff

The Great Britain-China Centre has a small team led by the Director, Katie Lee. Project staff have all lived and worked in China and are either native or fluent Mandarin-speakers bringing a wide range of project skills to our exchange programmes with Chinese partners. Their work is supported by members of the Executive Committee and a wider circle of professional and academic experts both in China and the UK.


Director - Katie Lee OBE Director - Katie Lee OBE

Katie joined the GBCC as Director in 1995 and has overseen GBCC's growing engagement with rule of law and human rights programmes in China. Prior to GBCC Katie worked at McKenna & Co (law firm) and the Sino-British Trade Council. Katie has an Mst. in International Human Rights Law (Oxford)

Jiang Bing is directly responsible for running the Centre's project activities and developing its programme.

Jiang Bing joined GBCC in November 2005 having spent five years as Assistant Director at the British Council in Beijing running the law and governance programme. Prior to that Jiang Bing worked as a prosecutor in the Supreme People's Procuratorate. Jiang Bing has an LLM from Nottingham University and a Bachelor law degree from China Political Science and Law University.

Senior Project Manager Human Rights & Communications - Orlando Edwards

Orlando is responsible for the GBCC's EU-funded Combating Torture programme, publicity and a range of other projects including the Centre's Media and Freedom of Expression work.

Orlando joined GBCC in January 2006, having worked for the British Council for the previous five years. For four of those years he was based in Shanghai and Beijing working on projects and the Think UK public diplomacy campaign. Orlando read Chinese at Edinburgh University and has lived in Taiwan and China.

Project Manager Judicial exchanges - Ms Zhang Xiaoping Project Manager Judicial exchanges - Ms Zhang Xiaoping

Ping runs the Judicial Studies Training scheme and Judicial Management programme, and is princple project manager for the EU Death Penalty programme. She also covers the GBCC 's other projects in the area of Administrative Law.

Ping joined the GBCC in April 2000. She has a LLB law degree from SOAS (1997) and passed the Bar Vocational Course from the Inns of Court, School of Law and was called to the Bar at Middle Temple (2004).

Office & IT Manager - Laura Rivkin Office Manager - Laura Rivkin

Laura joined GBCC in 1990 from the Chinese Section in the British Library. In 1995 she took on responsibility for the Centre's information and office systems & HR in January 2006. She is also responsible for the Great Britain China Educational Trust – a charity under the umbrella of the GBCC. She has an MA from SOAS in Chinese Art & Archaeology and a professional qualification in Library & Information Sciences from University College London.

Mike came to the GBCC from the Foreign Office in May 2011. He has over 30 years experience as an accountant.

Shirin started as the coorindator for the APPCG in March 2011. She graduated from University College London with an MSc in International Relations. She recently spent a year working at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in the Asia Pacific Directorate.
