London, 16 February 2017
– The Great Britain China Centre today announced the appointment of the Rt Hon Sir Oliver Letwin MP, former Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, as Vice President.
GBCC Chairman Sir Martin Davidson said: “I am delighted that Sir Oliver has agreed to become honorary Vice President of GBCC.
“While in Government, Sir Oliver visited China on multiple occasions to encourage greater people-to-people links through education, language exchange, and tourism, as well as encouraging greater Chinese investment into the UK. His expertise and connections both in China and the UK will greatly contribute to GBCC’s mission to build closer relations between our two countries and promote the exchange of ideas and best practice between China and the UK.
“We look forward to Sir Oliver’s support for our work, particularly in developing politician-to-politician links with China, and our projects focusing on key areas of legal reform with the Supreme People’s Court, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate, the China Law Society and the Party Leading Group on Legal and Judicial Reform.”
Sir Oliver said in a statement: “The relationship between the UK and China is of great importance to both our countries, and I am honoured to take on this role with the Great Britain China Centre to support the continued deepening of this relationship, and the important political dialogue and legal reform work which GBCC has conducted with China over the past four decades.
“We in Britain are committed to working with China to promote international security, increase mutual prosperity, and support China’s process of modernisation and reform. I look forward to doing what I can to help GBCC continue to build trust and understanding between our two countries.”
Sir Oliver intends to visit China with GBCC later this year as part of a cross-party Parliamentary delegation for the 10th UK-China Leadership Forum, an annual political dialogue organised by GBCC with the International Department of the Chinese Communist Party.
