GBCC Appoints Lord Mandelson as President

London, Oct 15 – The Great Britain China Centre today announced the appointment of Lord Mandelson, former First Secretary of State and former EU Trade Commissioner, as its President in succession to Lord Howe who retired in July.

GBCC Chairman Sir Martin Davidson said: “I am delighted that Lord Mandelson has agreed to become the President of GBCC.”

“As EU Trade Commissioner and in successive ministerial positions under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, Peter Mandelson has made major contributions to UK-China and EU-China relations.”

“In recent years he has played an important role in the cross-party political dialogues that the GBCC organises with China on an annual basis, and is a frequent visitor to China.”

“We look forward to Lord Mandelson’s support for our mission to build closer relations between the UK and China and in particular to expanding legal and judicial cooperation as Beijing implements new reforms to professionalise the judiciary and move closer towards the rule of law.”

Lord Mandelson said in a statement: “Chinese President Xi Jinping arrives next week for a state visit to the UK which will mark a new high in UK-China relations. In Britain there is a broad cross-party consensus on the importance of expanding and deepening relations with China.

"I am honoured to succeed‎ Geoffrey Howe in this role who worked so hard to develop relations between Britain and China,” Lord Mandelson said. “The GBCC does important work in building trust and understanding between us and I look forward to doing what I can to help with this.”

Lord Mandelson will visit China next month as part of a cross-party Parliamentary delegation that will visit Beijing and Shanghai for the 8th UK-China Leadership Forum, an annual political dialogue organized by GBCC with the International Department of the ruling Communist Party.

The GBCC is a non-departmental public body that works closely with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, governed by a Board of directors under the Chairman.
