COMMITTEE NEWS

The Great Britain-China Centre is pleased to announce that Lorna Ball has agreed to take up the post of Vice-Chairman, effective from June 2008.


Members of the Executive Committee are persons of distinction in their field. They have an interest in China and support the Centre’s objectives of promoting exchange between Britain and China. Members give guidance and advice to the Chairman and to the Director about the role and activities of the Centre. They are expected to become involved in appropriate programmes and projects of the Centre. They ensure that the funds provided by the Grant in Aid are spent in accordance with the purposes intended by Parliament.

The Executive Committee meets four times a year. Committee members serve for an initial period of three years and are unpaid but may be reimbursed for expenses. If you are interested in finding out more please contact The Director on 020 7235-6696 or by email: contact[at]gbcc.org.uk.

 

President

  • The Lord Howe of Aberavon CH, QC, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs from 1983-89, became President of the Centre in 1992.

Vice Presidents

  • Graham Greene CBE, was Chairman of the Great Britain-China Centre from 1986-1997 (committee member since 1985). He was appointed as a vice-president since 1997. He was also Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the British Museum.
  • Lady Pamela Youde OBE, was vice chairman of the Great Britain-China Centre 1988-2000, and is Trustee of the Great Britain-China Educational Trust since 2000.
  • Sir David Brewer CMG is a Director and Senior Consultant to International Financial Services London. He was Lord Mayor or London (2005-2006). Previously he was a Special Advisor to the Sedgwick Group and he is an Alderman for the Ward of Bassishaw in the City of London. Was GBCC chairman October 1997-2004.

Chairman

  • Peter Batey OBE is Senior Chairman of Vermilion Partners Ltd., an advisory and investment firm focused on China. Click on the link to see his resumé. He joined the Committee in July 2003 and took up the Chairmanship in September 2004.

Vice Chairmen

  • Mr Hugh Davies CMG, China Business Advisor, Old Mutual plc. He is a former Executive Director, Prudential Corporation Asia, and former British Ambassador on the Sino-British Joint Liaison Group for Hong Kong. Joined Committee as Hon.Treas. February 2002-December 2004. Vice-Chairman since December 2004.
  • Mr Rodney Bickerstaffe, formerly at the Trades Union Congress. Joined April 2002, appointed Vice-Chairman December 2007, effective February 2008.
  • Lorna Ball, Head of China Desk, BBC World Service. Joined the Committee April 2002, Appointed Vice-Chairman June 2008.

Former Vice Chairman

Deceased 3 October 2007 - Professor Elisabeth Croll CMG, Vice-Principle and Professor of Anthropology at the School of Oriental & African Studies, University of London. Joined October 2000. Appointed vice-chairman February 2003.

Former vice-Presidents:

Deceased 26 March 2005 - Lord Callaghan of Cardiff KG, Vice-President of GBCC until his death, was Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs when he opened the Centre in 1974, and Prime Minister from 1976 to 1979. He was appointed to the committee in 1984.

Deceased 17 July 2005 - Sir Edward Heath KG MBE, Vice-President of GBCC - was Prime Minister at the time of the establishment of full diplomatic relations with China in 1972. He was appointed to the committee in 1984 until his death.

Current Chairman Mr Peter Batey OBE, since September 2004

Peter Batey OBE, Chairman of the Great Britain-China Centre, is also chairman of the public affairs consultancy APCO Asia Ltd and chairman of the investment consultancy Batey Burn & Co. Ltd. He has lived in Beijing since 1986, initially as Arthur Andersen’s Chief Representative in China, then, from 1989, as chairman and co-founder of Batey Burn, which was acquired by APCO in 1999.

He first visited China when serving as Political Private Secretary to the Rt. Hon. Sir Edward Heath, KG MBE, from 1982 to 1986.

Peter has developed a wide network of personal relationships with senior Chinese officials in many central government ministries, state commissions
and administrative organs as well as in a number of provinces and major cities. He has advised on the establishment and expansion of dozens of joint ventures and wholly foreign invested enterprises. He serves as non-executive director of half a dozen foreign invested enterprises in China.

Peter was chairman of the British Chamber of Commerce in China from 1994-6. He was awarded the OBE for services to Sino-British investment and trade in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in June 1997. He served as President of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China in 2001-2. Peter is also chairman of the China Index Fund, and a member of the Council of the China-Britain Business Council (CBBC).

He was educated at Oxford University where he read politics, philosophy, and economics (PPE). He speaks Mandarin.

Joined Sedgwick Collins in 1959. In 1976 went to Tokyo to open the Segwick Group's office in Japan and lived there for three yers, during which time frequently visited Korea. Was responsible for setting up the Group office in China in 1981 and obtained the first broker's licence for Segwick in 1993, at which time was appointed Chairman of the new company, Segwick Insurance and Risk Management Consultants (China) Ltd.

Has for many years been associated with International Financial Services, London (formerly British Invisibles BI as the founding Chairman of their China Advisory Group and a member of their Japan Advisory Grouo. In 1998 was appointed a director, representing the Corporation of London and later that year moved to BI as a senior consultant, specialising in Asia.
