The Trust was set up in 1975 with proceeds from "The Genius of China" exhibition held at the Royal Academy in 1974. The current policy of the Trust is to support Chinese students in Britain via the Chinese Student Awards and the study of Chinese language through the annual Chinese Language Awards.

The Trust also grants awards on behalf of the Universities' China Committee in London, the Sino-British Fellowship Trust, and the Han Suyin Trust, on whose behalf it supports Chinese students studying in the UK.

Please note that students with British nationality requiring funding to give a conference paper in China, or for travel to China to pursue essential doctoral research, should use the 'Chinese Students Awards' application form.
